Splitbeard Bluestem, Andropogon ternerius

from $7.00

Local Ecotype

  • Perennial

  • Full to part sun

  • Medium to dry soil

  • 1-3 ft tall

  • Blooms in early fall

A smaller bluestem that forms cottony, forked tufts of seeds in fall. Splitbeard Bluestem grows in dry prairies and openings in upland forests, and has good drought tolerance. The dead leaf blades often repeatedly curl in winter, giving this grass appeal in all seasons. This tough grass does well in clay, rocky and sandy soils.

Splitbeard Bluestem does best in full to part sun, in average to dry conditions. It does not appreciate excessive competition from taller vegetation. Splitbeard Bluestem grows from 1-3 feet in height.
