It features rough, dark colored bark and glossy leaves with deep lobes and numerous pointed tips. Its large acorns feed a variety of wildlife. Fall foliage is often deep shades of burgundy, ochre, or maroon. Shumard Oaks may reach 100 feet at maturity. Large, mature Shumard oaks are an integral part of the bottomland forests of the Arkansas River valley.
