A medium sized fern of damp woodlands and boggy areas. Sensitive Fern is so named for its sensitivity to frost, as its fronds are completely deciduous, unlike many of our other ferns that are partially evergreen. In addition to the large, broad infertile fronds, this fern produces separate fertile fronds with odd bead-Iike structures that contain the spores. This species grows from shallow underground rhizomes, and will form dense stands in favorable conditions. Here at the western limit of its natural range, this fern often grows near seeps, shallow muddy creeks, and the margins of wetlands, where the soil retains some permanent moisture. Sensitive fern adapts well to ordinary garden soil, but this fern does not tolerate extended dry periods, and should be watered regularly during drought. Adding compost when planting can help retain moisture and encourage lush growth. In the garden, Sensitive Fern prefers shaded or partially shaded locations, particularly from intense afternoon sun. If planted in a wetland setting, this species can often tolerate more sun. Grows 1-2’ tall.
