A subtropical species of sage with a native range as far north as northern Texas. A tender perennial grown here as an annual, but which often reseeds itself. A reliable bloomer that produces a steady wave of showy red blooms from May until frost, which are quite attractive to butterflies, bumblebees and hummingbirds. The foliage has a herbal minty fragrance and is said to have medicinal properties.
Scarlet Sage is quite drought tolerant, and often continues blooming through mild droughts. Grows best in full to part sun. Not particular about soil, provided it drains well. Grows 3-4 feet tall, branching gradually.
