An attractive, adaptable medium to large shrub. It produces flat clusters of fragrant cream-colored flowers in late spring, followed by white berries in late summer. The flowers attract a myriad of different insects, and its berries quickly draw hungry songbirds. The coarsely fuzzy foliage turns a peach to reddish burgundy color in fall, and its twigs and young growth are bright red, offering winter appeal as well. Roughleaf Dogwood is found in a variety of situations including prairies, dry upland forests, rich lowland and riparian woods, and neglected lots and fencerows. It sometimes forms thickets and provides excellent cover for wildlife. It can be grown in full sun to part shade in medium dry to moist soil.
