A pillar of Oklahoma flora, and one of our most numerous trees. Post Oaks are a dominant component of the Cross Timbers ecoregion that stretches across much of central and eastern Oklahoma, along with Blackjack Oak and Black Hickory. Post Oaks are long-lived trees, with some local populations harboring individuals over 300 years old! This upland oak features thick, leathery leaves, small acorns, and thick, lightly ridged bark. Fall foliage varies widely, usually taking on earthy tones of yellow, orange, red, or bronze. Post Oak sometimes achieves a large size, with a very wide, low crown if given room to stretch, or becomes stunted and gnarled in dry rocky areas with poor soils.
