One of our favorite native trees on the landscape, Mexican plum boasts showy spring blossoms, edible fruit, a variable range of fall colors, and a compact growth habit that can fit into any yard. This tree is among the first to bloom, its copious white flowers providing vital early food for pollinators. In late summer to fall, the cherry-sized fruit ripen a peach to reddish color, with a sweet, sour, and moderately tannic flavor profile. They can be eaten raw or cooked into excellent pies and preserves. The lightly fuzzy leaves turn anywhere from yellow to orange to reddish bronze in fall. Reaches 10-15 feet at maturity with a rounded crown. Plant two for adequate pollination and fruit production. Mexican Plum is moderately drought and shade tolerant and adaptable to a variety of soil types, though the best quality fruit is produced in moist, loamy soils in full to part sun.
