Late-blooming perennial wildflower of rocky open forests. Local ecotypes of this species tend to be a deep bluish-purple. The flowers are relatively large for an aster with recurved phyllaries. This tidy species does not spread through rhizomes, maintaining a tight clump like the similar  Drummond’s and Skyblue Aster.
