This petite, graceful sedge is the perfect accent to any planting—used as a border, grown between stones on a footpath, tucked in among low-growing flowering plants, or en masse as a matrix planting. Its flowers and spiky seedheads hold visual interest. This evergreen tolerates light foot traffic, and has potential as a lawn substitute, particularly in partly shaded areas. Fibrous roots help control erosion. Leavenworth’s Sedge is an adaptable upland sedge with a wide range of applications.
Leavenworth’s Sedge grows well in full sun to light shade in mesic to dry conditions. Unlike wetland sedges, Leavenworth’s Sedge needs well draining soil and is better suited to rock gardens than marsh plantings. Very rugged once established. Tolerates occasional mowings. Easily colonizes lawns and bare soil via seed. The tufted clumps may reach up to 12” tall and wide.
