Late Purple Aster is a rugged, drought tolerant perennial that produces lavender colored flowers on the ends of its wiry, delicate stems. Like other Symphyotrichum species, it is a late bloomer, stretching from August to October. Its blooms attract numerous pollinators. It features rather small clasping leaves covered in rough hairs, which reduce water loss. This plant powers through blistering heat and blooms reliably in times of drought.
This plant prefers habitats that are often rather dry, such as sandy prairies and rocky upland forests. It will happily grow in any well-drained soil in areas receiving full sun to light shade. It is quite tolerant of shade, though plants in sunny sites tend to be larger and fuller. Late Purple Aster is among the smaller of the fall asters, usually reaching around 1-2 feet tall and wide. This delightful plant is an excellent addition to rock gardens or any dry spot needing some color.
