Indian grass is a large, warm season perennial grass with elegant pluming inflorescences that begins blooming in late summer to early fall. It is considered one of the “Big Four” grasses that are the primary composition of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. It has excellent drought tolerance. It looks great in mixed plantings with other grasses or accenting flowering plants.
Indiangrass seeds are eaten by some birds and small mammals, and several prairie skippers use it as a host plant.
Indiangrass can reach heights of 3-7 feet while blooming. It prefers full to part sun and mesic to dry soils. It is adapted to many soils types and will tolerate clay, sandy, or rocky soils.
