Oklahoma’s only native palm! Dwarf Palmetto occurs naturally in Oklahoma in parts of McCurtain County, our southeasternmost county. This shrubby palm is able to withstand cold temperatures to 0 F and below. It is best planted in a sheltered site near a house, fence, or other structure to protect it from winter winds and extreme cold. Though generally evergreen, it may die back following extreme cold events, but will often regrow from its extensive taproot. At maturity, it will produce clusters of small flowers followed by black berries. This variety of Dwarf Palmetto reaches 3-6 feet in height and width. It does well in part sun to part shade in mesic to moist soil.
