A vining shrub perfect for fences and arbors. Climbing Rose produces bunches of fragrant pink blossoms in late spring to early summer, followed by small rose hips. The blooms provide nectar and pollen, while the hips are relished by songbirds. A variety of insects, such as leaf cutting bees, make use of the foliage. Here at the western edge of its range, Climbing Rose is often found in open woodlands and forest edges, where it uses surrounding vegetation as a natural trellis to find sunlight. If grown in full sun, it can often take on a shrubbier shape, and this can also be encouraged by pruning.
Climbing Rose can be grown in part shade to full sun, and prefers a moderately fertile loam. It is more shade tolerant than other native roses, though perhaps a bit less drought tolerant, particularly in full sun settings.
It does not spread through rhizomes, but will often root wherever its sprawling stems touch the ground. The sprawling stems may reach 7-12 feet.
