Bitternut Hickory is a handsome medium-sized hickory of bottomland and floodplain forests. Although its small nuts are too bitter to be enjoyed by humans, they are enjoyed by wildlife. Bitternut hickory has distinctive sulfur yellow buds that unfold into the familiar musky-scented compound leaves of the hickories. Hickories are host plants to numerous insect groups. Bitternut Hickory reaches heights of up to 80 feet and prefers mesic to moist loamy soils.
