Big Bluestem is a large, warm season perennial grass that forms distinctive inflorescences in early fall shaped like a turkey’s foot. This long-lived grass can reach heights of 3-8 feet while in bloom, and it provides excellent cover for wildlife.. It has excellent drought tolerance .The foliage is a host for multiple species of skippers and feeds a variety of other insects. Sparrows and other songbirds sometimes eat the seeds.
Big Bluestem grows best in full to part sun. It may tolerate some amounts of shade, but has a tendency to flop sideways and lack structure in shadier spots. This adaptable grass will grow in moist to dry soils with a variety of textures including clay, sand, loam, or rock.
