Arkansas Penstemon is a small Penstemon that ranges into the hills of far eastern Oklahoma. Unlike many of its brethren of open habitats, Arkansas Penstemon is a woodland species, found in rocky upland forests and steep, shaded ravines. It has an early bloom period for a Penstemon as well, beginning in early to mid April and continuing for a month or more. The small blooms are visited by pollinating insects, especially smaller bees.
Arkansas Penstemon grows best in part sun to medium shade. Much of its growth occurs before the leafy canopy is filled out. It can tolerate a variety of moisture regimes provided the soil is well draining. Arkansas Penstemon generally reaches 18-24” tall while in flower.
