Local Ecotype

  • Large shrub to small tree. 8-20 feet.

  • Full to part sun

  • Medium to dry soil

  • Blooms in spring

A rare tree that is endemic to limestone bluffs, outcrops and glades. Occurs in Oklahoma only in scattered and isolated populations. Smoketree produces dramatic cottony plumes of rust to burgundy colored inflorescences in spring that resemble billowing clouds of smoke. This species has male and female flowers on separate plants, with male flowers being larger and more showy. Smoketree also boasts impressive fall foliage, ranging from deep gold to orange. Smoketree ranges from about 10-20 feet in height, occasionally taller. It requires well drained soil but otherwise is easy to grow in the landscape. Well established plants are fairly drought tolerant. Can be planted in sunny or partially shaded locations, but adequate sunlight encourages blooming.
